Eastover Students Have a Bowl of Fun Collecting Cereal Donations

In late May, Eastover students collected enough cereal boxes to fill 10 large collection boxes for Gleaners Food Bank. This was the culmination of a special project led by grade 4 students.

The fourth grade classes at Eastover, also known as the SOARing squads, wanted to give back to the community, and their teachers wanted an opportunity for them to lead a school-wide project. After a quick Google search, they decided to support the 2025 Children’s Hospital Cereal Drive via Gleaners Food Bank. This annual drive is held specifically to provide breakfast to Michigan students who rely on school-provided meals.

The Eastover students got to work making posters to put up around school, and they visited each classroom to present to other students about the drive. According to grade 4 teacher Jennifer Pratt, “This was a great way to let the younger students see the future leaders of Eastover.”

Pratt explained that collecting the 10 full boxes was great, but that quantity wasn’t necessarily their goal: the act of giving back and providing a leadership opportunity were most important. They were pleasantly surprised with the huge response (one student brought in 12 boxes!), especially given the busy spring timeframe. They hope to support the cereal drive again next year.

Well done, Eastover Eagles!
